COLUMBIA (WACH) -- First things first, let's talk about what I mean to wear my hair "natural". I mean free of any chemicals to permanently straighten or curl my hair!
When I was 12, I started getting my hair chemically straightened (or relaxed). The process can burn your scalp or even damage your hair, and has to be done every 4-6 weeks. One day, when I was 21, I grew tired of manipulating my hair to what it DIDN'T want to do (and burning my scalp!), and I cut ALL of my hair off and decided to go natural!
It's hard sometimes to have natural hair in a world where it seems like everyone's hair is super straight. I do flat iron my hair sometimes, but not much. Inspiring stories like this news anchor and breast cancer survivor who ditched her wig to wear her natural hair on-air, Oscar Award winner Lupita Nyong'o, or this 12-year-old girl who refused to change her natural against her school's wishes, makes me proud to have natural hair!
Would you consider wearing your hair in it's natural texture more often? Why or why not?
