FORT JACKSON, SC (AP) -- Maj. Gen. Bradley Becker is handing over command of Fort Jackson to a new general officer.
The two-star Army general is departing Fort Jackson for Washington, where he will be in charge of the military district of the nation's capital and head up its Joint Force Headquarters.
The 51-year-old Becker says he comes away impressed with how young men and women are rising to the demands of Army basic training. He says soldiers must learn to think on their feet in a wide variety of situations.
On Friday, Becker hands command of the base near Columbia to Brig. Gen. Roger Cloutier.
In February, Cloutier came to Columbia to hear the community's concerns over potential budget cuts that threaten half of Fort Jackson's 7,000 jobs.
