OnPoint on WACH Fox: SC's infant mortality rate
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - On this week's edition of OnPoint on WACH Fox we look at the infant mortality rate in rural South Carolina.
Babies in a broad swath of rural South Carolina face a toxic mix of poverty, chronically sick mothers, premature birth and daunting barriers to healthcare. Groups like Family Solutions of the Lowcountry, formerly Low Country Healthy Start, work to reduce the Palmetto State’s infant mortality rate in rural parts of the state.
South Carolina has long ranked among the deadliest states for newborns.
In recent years, notable gains have been made in the state’s booming metropolitan areas, where state-of-the-art hospitals and programs exist to help new mothers through the risks of pregnancy and fragile ?rst months after birth.
But what about the poor areas of South Carolina that are often left behind?
If they are lucky, they are in the service area of Family Solutions of the Low Country. As the group celebrates 20 years, they are reporting outcomes nearly three times better than the state average.
This week we look at the barriers some pregnant women face and how many are overcoming them.
