OnPoint on WACH Fox: SC's teen pregnancy rate dropping, while STD rate rises
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) - On this week's edition of on OnPoint on WACH Fox we look at South Carolina's teen pregnancy rate. It's going down, while the rate of sexually transmitted diseases is going is rising.
In 2015, South Carolina ranked in the top-ten nationally for rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea and diagnosed HIV for all ages, according to DHEC. This is great cause for concern because it means so many young people still aren't practicing safe sex.
Many experts believe more focus should be placed on high risk populations such as youth in foster care and the juvenile justice system, as well as youth that are unemployed and not in school.
This week on OnPoint on WACH Fox South, we examine the methods a number of agencies are using to reach people to help cut into the numbers.
We also remember the life of Representative Joe Neal who passed away early last week. His sudden death has rocked his colleagues at the State House and left a void in a Lower Richland community he served for more than 20 years.
