Southwest details SC flights, Columbia not on schedule

Columbia Metro has missed out on Southwest flights.

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Southwest Airlines has announced they'll be expanding flights to Charleston and Greenville.

Officials with the airline say they'll expand with several weekday departures that will start next March. They'll travel roundtrip to places like Baltimore-Washington, Chicago, Nashville, Houston and Orlando.

The addition is estimated to save flyers around $180 million a year.

Columbia Metropolitan Airport has missed out on the expansion.

When Southwest originally announced they were coming to South Carolina in May, Midlands tourism officials said they did all they could to lure the low cost carrier to Columbia.

That left local airport officials baffled at the announcement and looking for ways to entice flyers.

We asked our viewers if they thought the addition to the Lowcountry and the Upstate would hurt Columbia Metro, and where they fly from when they travel.

Sixty-two percent said they fly from Charlotte when they book tickets. Columbia came in second place with 31 percent.

Charleston grabbed three percent and Greenville-Spartanburg picked up only one percent in the poll posted on on May 12.
