COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Textile magnate Roger Milliken is throwing cash into helping the South Carolina Republican Party he helped create pay off its headquarters mortgage and save money through energy efficiency.
Republican Party Chairwoman Karen Floyd said Monday that Milliken will match up to $170,000 put up to retire a $340,000 mortgage on the party's Columbia headquarters. She says he'll also match half of the upgrades needed to save power and water at the headquarters.
Milliken says he wants to help the party meet energy and environmental design standards. He says saving those expenses will help the party cut operating costs. The consultant handling the work expects the GOP could save about $3,000 a year.
