CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- A Citadel graduate has donated 544 acres along the Black River to the state military college which is considering using the tract as a research station.
The Charleston school announced Monday the Georgetown County land has been donated by Lee Faircloth, a 1967 graduate from Charlotte, N.C..
The undeveloped tract includes more than a mile of waterfront. It is home to plants and wildlife, including wild turkeys, black bears, coyotes, deer and alligators.
Faircloth graduated from The Citadel with a math degree. He says he appreciates what he learned there and he and his wife wanted to give something back to the school.
Faircloth says he hopes the land will allow The Citadel to become a leader in coastal research.
