COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A former South Carolina college dean has received the state's highest honor.

Charles Bierbauer, the former dean of the College of Information and Communications at the University of South Carolina, was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Gov. Henry McMaster on Wednesday.

Bierbauer joined the university in 2002 following a 30-year career in journalism, which included working as a correspondent for ABC News and CNN. He was the first dean of the newly merged College of Mass Communications and Information Studies. Bierbauer also served as interim vice president for communications in 2009-10.

He stepped down as dean after the 2016-17 academic year.

Bierbauer is scheduled to moderate several gubernatorial debates this year for South Carolina ETV.
