Golfing in the name of education

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Swinging in honor of an African American first in the Palmetto State.

The fourth annual Israel Brooks Memorial Golf Tournament was held today at the Oak Hills Golf Club.

Brooks was the first African American state trooper on the highway patrol.

The golf tournament is planned to honor his legacy and raise money for a scholarship fund named in his memory.

This family says Mr. Brooks was all about education.

All the proceeds go to benefit scholarships for high school students and that was one of the things that he thought was very important. Sso in a way it TMs kind of like continuing with his legacy, says Nadine Brooks, daughter of Israel Brooks.

The event was hosted by Saint John's Baptist Church.

Brooks died in 2007.
