Nursery Road Elementary teacher surprised with "Oscar of Teaching"

Nursery Road Elementary School teacher Vanessa Torres celebrates winning Milken Educator Award with Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman, District Five Board Members, District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner and her daughter Sophia.

IRMO, SC (WACH) - A Lexington-Richland School District Five elementary school teacher was surprised Tuesday with the Milken Educator of the Year Award.

Nursery Road Elementary School Spanish teacher Vanessa Torres was presented with the award and a $25,000 check at an assembly Tuesday morning.

The Milken Educator Award is called the "Oscars of Teaching" by Teacher Magazine. Torres is one of 35 teachers across the nation to received the honor and the lone representative from South Carolina.

"I am in utter shock. I truly cannot believed I won this. It means so much to me and my family to be recognized with the Milken Educator Award," remarked Torres.

Torres has been at Nursery Road for five years and immerses her students by teaching Spanish through storytelling, skits, games, songs, salsa dancing and peso point prize raffles.

"We are so proud of Mrs Torres! She is a caring, competent and dedicated teacher who strives every day to make a positive difference for her students," said district superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner.
