COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Governor Nikki Haley has proclaimed October 27, 2011 as South Carolina Head Start Awareness Day.
The statewide event showcases South Carolinas school readiness programs serving vulnerable children from birth to 5 years old.
More than 13,600 South Carolina children are served through twenty-six diverse Head Start, Early Head Start, Migrant Head Start, and Native American Head Start Programs.
Thursday an event taking place at Finlay Park featured special attractions and activities for the children.
Organizers say although Head Start tries to help children develop educationally at a young age, teaching starts with the parent.
"One of the things is that they need to know that they're their childs primary teacher so it begins at the home," says Wanda James, SC Head Start.
Head Start Awareness activities are being held all over the country during the month of October.
This year marks the 17th Head Start Awareness Day celebration event in South Carolina.
