SC senator offers college tuition plan
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Sen. Vincent Sheheen says high tuition costs are disgraceful and he wants to create a partnership with state colleges and universities that will focus on tuition freezes and rewarding in-state enrollment.
The Camden Democrat announced the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2018 on Tuesday during a news conference at the Statehouse. The proposal would also require lawmakers to focus more state resources on increasing financial aid opportunities and repairing old facilities as long as colleges do their part by constraining tuition growth.
Sheheen said he has been working on a comprehensive approach to higher education legislation for months and said he deliberately waited until now to introduce it so that during the offseason he can hold hearings and fine-tune the legislation in preparation for next January's session.
