Study confirms SC losing teachers at rapid rate
ROCK HILL, SC (WACH) - A report released by the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement shows the number of teachers in SC are drastically dipping.
According to the report, nearly 6,500 public school teachers did not return to the same position this academic year and of those more than 4,800 left the teaching industry.
Of those 4,8000 38% left within their first five years and 12% after just one year.
The report contends that at the beginning of this school year, there were 481 open teaching positions in SC.
Another disturbing trend is that only 1,898 students completed a SC teacher education program in 2015-16 compared to 2,447 in 2012-13, causing districts to hire teacher with alternate certifications.
