USC School of Medicine students learn residency destinations

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Family and friends gathered along with USC School of Medicine students Thursday to find out where they'll study their medical specialty.

Students opened envelopes with their destinations inside, then pinned the announcement on a map as they finished one journey only to begin another. The event took place at The Zone at Williams Brice Stadium.

"Forty percent will stay in the state," says Medical College Dean Dr. Richard Hoppmann. "We have students this year going all over the country from California up to the Northeast. They will now arrange to move and spend anywhere from three to five years of their careers there."

Match Day is not only the next step for individuals; it's the next step for many couples who will be moving together after settling down during years of study in the same field.
