Business owners say Gervais water project is a must

      COLUMBIA (WACH) -- It TMs a $7 million project aimed at improving the city's water system along Gervais Street.

      Officials say the water rehabilitation project includes installation of temporary water lines, cleaning out the old pipes and installing pipe walls with cement.

      Mayor Steve Benjamin spoke with members of the Midlands Utility Coordinating Committee about the project Thursday.

      Some of the members represent area utility companies like Time Warner Cable, AT&T and SCE&G.

      Whitney Black is the co-owner of Whit-Ash, a furniture store along Gervais Street.

      Black says this project it's important to replace the old city pipe system.

      Mayor Steve Benjamin says the project will be like a stimulus project for the Midlands and it will help improve water services delivery.

      The project is expected to be completed next year.
