NEWBERRY, SC (WACH) -- Those who like to buy fresh foods and support their local economy can do both a little bit easier with Newberry Farmers Co-op.
The co-op celebrated its grand opening Saturday, selling fresh produce and boiled peanuts from nine farms located in Newberry County.
"We didn't really think that there was a really good way to get produce in Newberry County that was all locally grown," said Ben Setzler, owner of Newberry Farmers Co-op. "There are some places around that sell from like the State Farmers' Market in Florida/Georgia area, but we wanted something where everything just came from Newberry County -- were everything was locally grown."
By connecting the people with the food that is grown near them, the co-op expects more Newberry County farms to join in.
"This is more of a centrally located place for all the farmers to pull their resources into one area, where all of the farmers don't have to come sit at their own stand all the time," said Setzler. "Instead one person sits at this stand, and they can keep doing what they do best, which is of course farming."
Newberry Farmers Co-op is located at 3241 College Street, Newberry.
