COLUMBIA (WACH) - Authorities say one two people have been arrested in connection with an officer-involved shooting investigation.
According to Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott, Shawn Maurice Pickens, 20, is charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, unlawful delivery of a pistol to a person under the age of 18 and failure to stop on police command. A 16-year-old was also arrested and is facing similar weapons charges.
Police say the charges stem from a shooting incident that occurred Monday afternoon at the 700 block of Vernon Street.
A spokesperson with the Columbia Police Department said Monday that gunfire was exchanged between at least one suspect and an officer on patrol in the area.
Scott says two members of the department's Drug Suppression Team were responding to a concerned citizen's emergency call about a man with a gun in the neighborhood. Shots were fired after the officers saw two men who fit the description of the suspects described to them previously.
Police say one suspect is accused of presenting a gun to officers before the shooting. The teen was shot in the leg during the incident. He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving treatment for injuries that do not seem to be life-threatening.
The investigation is ongoing by the State Law Enforcement Division.
