108 year-old Richland County voter, activist passes away

COLUMBIA (WACH)-Richland County's oldest registered voter passed away Friday.

Ms. Donella Wilson was 108 years old and was one of the first African-American registered voters in the county.

Wilson lived through the Jim Crow era and voted in the election that would name President Barack Obama as the first black President of the United States.

On July 12, 2017 she received The Order of the Palmetto, the state's highest civilian honor for extraordinary lifetime service and achievements of national or statewide significance.

A close friend of the Wilson family tells WACH FOX News she died surrounded by family and close friends.

No arrangements have been made at this time.
