12 charged in Irmo gambling ring

Brett Parker in court last year

      COLUMBIA (WACH / AP) â??The

      Richland County Sheriffâ??s Department

has arrested twelve men as part of their investigation into a sports betting operation that was discovered as part of a

      double homicide

      last summer.

Richland County Captain Chris Cowan says that more charges of misdemeanor gambling are expected over the next few days.

The suspects are accused of placing bets with a sports betting ring operated by 42-year-old Brett Parker of Irmo.

The betting operation came to light after Parker's wife and a man were shot to death in the Parkers' home last year. Parker, who also faces

      federal charges

of operating an illegal gambling business, is to stand trial on

      murder charges

      in May.

Parker told deputies he killed Bryan Capnerhurst after Capnerhurst had killed Tammy Parker.
