15-year-old who drowned at Lake Carolina identified


COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH)-- Columbia Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins and Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the teenage victim who drowned in Lake Carolina.

Coroner Gary Watt stated that 15-year-old Elias Pierre died as a result of asphyxia due to fresh water drowning.

Columbia Fire Department and Richland County EMS were called at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to a water rescue on Lake Carolina at a bridge on Lake Carolina Boulevard.

Upon arrival first responders were informed that three teens jumped into the lake and Pierre was last seen distressed and went under the water and did not resurface.

CFD requested resources from Richland County Sheriff's Department and SCDNR.

Divers from RCSD & SCDNR began their search for Pierre nearest the bridge.

As crews began to discontinue their search for the night due to safety reasons, divers discovered the 15-year-old.

Chief Jenkins and Coroner Watts strongly encourages all citizen to learn to swim as that is the best thing anyone can do to stay safe in and around water.
