MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- The largest Ferris wheel in the eastern U.S. is open on the South Carolina shore.

Several hundred people were waiting this morning as local officials and the developers cut a blue ribbon opening the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel.

The $12 million attraction has air-conditioned gondolas and rises 200 feet above the shore. It's located along Myrtle Beach's new 1.2-mile oceanfront boardwalk and takes visitors for a 12-minute ride beside the beach. The SkyWheel also features 1 million LED lights that will create a computerized light show each evening.

The tallest Ferris wheel in the country is at the Texas State Fair in Dallas. It's 12 feet higher than the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel.
