Update: 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in Orangeburg County

Orangeburg, S.C. (WACH)-- Deputies are investigating after a toddler was shot in Orangeburg County.

According to Oraneburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell around 1:45 p.m. Friday a call came out that a child had been shot in the upper body at an Orangeburg business.

Investigators learned that the child had found a gun inside of his parents vehicle and he apparently shot himself with it.

“At this time, we are praying and thinking about this child who we believe at this point shot himself after a series of events that placed him next to a loaded weapon,” the sheriff said. “It’s just tragic and we’re pulling for him to make a full recovery.”

The father of the boy had had car trouble earlier Friday and decided to call his wife to come pick him up.

Before leaving his vehicle on the side of the road, he removed his handgun and placed it in his wife's car with their three-year-old son.

As the man stopped by a local repair shop to find a replacement part for his vehicle, his son found the gun in the car and apparently shot himself.

The toddler has been airlifted to a local hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.

“Everything has a time and place,” Ravenell said. “Right now we’re just hoping and praying this child recovers. We will, however, look at the elements of what happened.

No charges have been filed in the shooting.
