A frigid day for the record books

Columbia (WACH/NWS) -- Tuesday January 7, 2013 will go down as a day for the record books!

Two record temperatures fell in Columbia today.

The first record to fall was the record low temperature.

The previous record of 16 degrees set in 1924 has been replaced by the 13 degrees we reached at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.

The second record we broke was the high temperature today.

Normally when a record high temperature occurs you automatically assume warmer than normal temperatures.

That is not the case for today.

Today we set a record for coldest high temperature in Columbia of 30 degrees.

The previous record cold high temperature was 31 which occurred in 1988.

Daily temperature records have been kept in Columbia since 1887.

The arctic air mass that is responsible for the frigid temperatures will hang around through Wednesday before a gradual warming trend begins.
