Mon, 12 Aug 2013 20:59:31 GMT — COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)- An aircraft pilot escapes a serious situation today in downtown Columbia. Around 4:00 p.m. reports of a single, fixed wing aircraft having trouble with its landing gear came into the Columbia Fire Department. The aircraft stayed in the air around downtown Columbia before a successful wheels-up landing at Columbia's Owens Field Airport. Columbia Fire Department Chief Aubrey Jenkins said that the pilot "came down in a straight line," going on to say the pilot landed as if he had his gear down. The pilot was not injured in the landing, and the malfunction is under investigation by the FAA. Chief Jenkins also said that there was no damage to the runway at Owens Field.
