      Apartment fire that damaged 24 units ruled as arson

      Chief Aubrey Jenkins is seeking the communities assistance in identifying a man who alerted residents in one of the buildings to evacuate.

      COLUMBIA (WACH) - Columbia fire officials have ruled an apartment fire that damaged 24 units as arson.

      Chief Aubrey Jenkins is seeking the communities assistance in identifying a man who alerted residents in one of the buildings to evacuate. Jenkins would like to thank the man for his effort, and also believes he could have information that could assist the investigation.

      Anyone with information on the identity of this person is asked to contact the City of Columbia's Fire Marshal's Office at 803-545-3701.

      The fire at The Club at Carolina Stadium occurred on June 12 and caused an estimated $400,000 in damage.

      Authorities are not releasing additional information on the the evidence "as it would jeopardize the investigation and any criminal proceedings," according to a release from the fire department.

      Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the South Carolina Arson Hotline at 800-92-ARSON (800-922-7766). Callers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a $1000 reward leading to an arrest and conviction.
