BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say strong currents in the Ashepoo River likely contributed to the drowning of a 13-year-old Beaufort boy.
The Beaufort Gazette reports that Norman Kirkland Jr. was swimming in the river with his grandfather and a cousin when he disappeared under the water Saturday evening.
Colleton County Sheriff's Deputy Chief Ted Stanfield says divers found the youth's body about 10 minutes after they entered the water.
Stanfield says Kirkland likely got pulled under by a strong current from the outgoing tide near the U.S. 17 bridge.
