Beaufort man could face dealth penalty for double murder

Jurors are hearing evidence in Beaufort this week in the trail of a man charged with two counts of murder

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- Jurors are hearing evidence in Beaufort this week in the trial of a man charged with two counts of murder in the 2009 shooting deaths of his ex-girlfriend and her 4-year-old son.

Opening arguments were held Monday in the trial of 31-year-old Ernest Stewart Daise of Burton.

He's charged in the deaths of 34-year-old Jeanine Mullen and her 4-year-old son, Waltfredo Davis-Mullen, in the community of Dale in November 2009. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

It's the first death penalty trial in Beaufort County in five years.

Prosecutor Duffie Stone said Monday that Daise set out to kill the victims. But Daise's defense attorney said no blood or gunshot residue was found on the sweatshirt investigators say Daise wore during the killings.
