      Benjamin to speak with police on crash

      Mayor-elect Steve Benjamin is set to speak with police about a wreck that sent a Columbia woman to the hospital.

      The State newspaper of Columbia reported Friday that Steve Benjamin is expected to discuss Monday to discuss the April 21 crash with police.

      Clarion Hotel worker Deborah Rubens has been in a coma since her Toyota Tercel collided with Steve Benjamin's Mercedes SUV about 6 a.m.

      Benjamin had won a run-off election hours earlier to become Columbia's first black mayor. He was on his way to media interviews and wasn't hurt in the wreck.

      Rubens' attorney says she has a brain injury, a broken collarbone and a broken pelvis.

      Columbia police are investigating. They haven't released reports, transcripts or audios of 911 calls.
