Block party shooting victim identified

Newberry County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting at a large block party in Prosperity that leaves one person dead and wounds another.

Newberry County (WACH) - The victim of an early Sunday morning shooting in Prosperity has been identified. Coroner Craig Newton says 19-year-old Zemeckis Monteco Devante Houston died on the scene. Houston was a resident of Newberry. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.

Officials say they were called to the scene on Rikard School Road after a call regarding traffic congestion and noise. Once deputies arrived on the scene, they say the road was completely blocked. As they were attempting to get to the party, shots were fired. A large crowd of people began running from the scene.

Deputies were also notified that another person had been shot. The wounded victim was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster is asking witnesses to come forward and provide information to help with this case. Due to the large crowd of people fleeing the gunshots, information is limited. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 803.321.2222 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-Crime-SC.
