Body found Thursday is that of a missing Columbia woman

Rachel Goodnight

COLUMBIA (WACH) - A body found off Garners Ferry Road is that of Rachel Marie Goodnight.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said the autopsy shows that Goodnight died from blow to the head. It is currently being investigated as a homicide.

A spokesperson with the Columbia Police Deparment says Goodnight was romantically involved with 41-year-old Lawrence Stevens.

Stevens was arrested and charged with giving false information to police and urban camping after Richard Kinsley, Jr. was found murdered last week. Stevens is still in jail.

Goodnight was last seen at 951 Hazelwood Road in Columbia around March 28.

That is also the last day Goodnight's mother recalls speaking with her daughter on the phone.

According to the Columbia Police Department, it is believed Goodnight did not have a permanent address and frequented a recently demolished homeless camp at the Hazelwood Road location.

Goodnight's mother reported her as missing on Tuesday after repeatedly trying to contact her with no success.
