COLUMBIA (WACH/AP)â??Can concrete float? Engineering students from the University of South Carolina are hoping the answer is yes, as they compete in the American Society of Civil Engineers' regional conference on Friday.
The canoe race, on Lake Murray, runs at Pine Island in the morning. Students from 10 Southeastern schools will compete against each other as they test which team constructs the fastest and most buoyant canoe using concrete and other materials.
The American Society of Civil Engineers says on its website that concrete boat building dates back to 1848, when Joseph Louis Lambot built thin-walled, reinforced concrete boats at his estate in France. Concrete also was used to build barges during World War II to replace scarce steel supplies.
