COLUMBIA, SC (WACH)--The Capital Senior Center was renamed for a South Carolina legend Thursday.
The Capital Senior Center officially changed its name to the Lourie Center. It is named after former Senator Isadore Lourie; who spent almost 30 years in the South Carolina House of Representatives and Senate. Lourie was well known for his work to help senior citizens by contributing to legislation and reform efforts for aging adults.
Lourie along with other lawmakers, helped open 72 senior centers in Couth Carolina.
Isadore's son, Sen. Joel Lourie (D-Richland) said the center will honor his father's legacy forever.
"People remember him for being a real voice of reason, a voice of calm, yet a voice of progress," Joel said. "We would not have a center like this today had it not been for the work my dad; who is very instrumental in creating the revenue stream that helped build senior centers across South Carolina."
Next week will mark the 10th anniversary since Isadore Lourie passed away.
