COLUMBIA (WACH) - Charges have been filed in the deadly incident that involved a dump truck hitting a pedestrian in a motorized wheelchair in Five Points last Monday, according to the Columbia Police Department.
Authorities say William Travis Crutchfield, 66, is charged with reckless homicide. Cructhfield was driving a commercial dump truck at the intersection of Greene and Harden Streets in Five Points on Monday, June 25, and is accused of failing to stop prior to the "stop bar" at the intersection's red light.
George Jackson, 67, had the right of way and was attempting to cross the street in a motorized wheelchair when he was struck by the dump truck. He died as a result of his injuries.
Officials with the department say Crutchfield turned himself into police officers and was transported to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
The investigation is ongoing.
