COLUMBIA (WACH / AP) ?? Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago is shopping around for a new tool to help fight crime from the sky.
Chief Santiago is hoping to by a gyrocopter, which will help with vehicle chases, searches for missing people and suspects, and traffic control.
The aircraft, which is smaller than a helicopter will cost between $70,000 and $100,000, most of which, according to the department, will be paid for with proceeds seized from criminal activity. A grant will also help cover the costs.
Currently, CPD has two pilots that will need several hours of additional training to be certified to fly the gyrocopter.
