Chief Scott: Columbia Police Department is fully staffed

Scott says the department is now fully staffed with more than 400 sworn officers and 91 civilian officers.

COLUMBIA (WACH) - Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott Scott says the Columbia Police Department is now fully staffed with more than 400 sworn officers and 91 civilian officers.

Scott met with Columbia City Council members Tuesday to give an update on how the Columbia Police Department has been improving.

According to Scott, the department is doing a better job in the Five Points area.

"We increased our presence, obviously, down in the [Five Points] area...the Columbia-Richland Fire Department has really taken a good look at overcrowding. It's not just Five Points in and of itselft for violent crime. There's all types of other issues that go on that we must make sure that we enforce," said Scott.

Scott also discussed the importance of officers having more take home vehicles, pointing to last Friday's bank robbery as an example of officers coming from home to help out with that particular incident. He is also considering adding a five dollar assesment fee for officers needed to patrol special events like weddings and 5k runs on top of the $35 per hour fee.
