City of Columbia passes substitute motion for strong mayor referendum

Members of the Columbia City Council voted 4-3 on a substitute motion allowing citizens to vote on December 3, 2013 for the Strong Mayor referendum, if petition signatures are certified.

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - Members of the Columbia City Council voted 4-3 on a substitute motion allowing citizens to vote on December 3, 2013 for the Strong Mayor referendum, if petition signatures are certified.

The substitute motion was suggested by Councilwoman Tameika Devine, who says the public should be given more time to learn the difference between a Mayor-Council form of government versus a City Manager-Council form of government.

If the referendum is passed on the new election date, the Mayor-Council form of government will become effective July 1, 2014.

Backers of the original voting date being November 5th of 2013 wanted the referendum to be voted on that day, to save tax payers money.
