Clements opens campaign headquarters

COLUMBIA (WACH, AP) -- A third-party candidate for U.S. Senate in South Carolina is opening his state campaign headquarters in the capital city.

Green Party candidate Tom Clements talked briefly on Thursday and answered questions as he opened his new office on Sumter Street next to the Roly Poly sandwich shop.

"As a South Carolinian from Georgia, it's always painful to see that we're always close to the bottom," Clements explains. "I'm going to put education at the top of my agenda and healthcare, cutting the debt and protecting social security."

Clements is getting some support from Democrats who are leery of voting for their party's candidate Alvin Greene, especially after he was indicted earlier this month on two charges, including a felony count of showing pornography.

The Aiken County Democratic Party website includes a link to Clements' site right below Greene's name on a list of the party's candidates.

Republican U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint is seeking a second term.
