Colbert heading to Charleston to raise funds for sister's campaign

Comedian Stephen Colbert will be in Charleston this weekend holding fundraisers to benefit his sister's campaign for Congress.

CHARLESTON, SC (WACH / AP) - Comedian Stephen Colbert will be in Charleston this weekend holding fundraisers to benefit his sister's campaign for Congress.

Elizabeth Colbert-Busch is hoping to fill the 1st District seat left vacant when Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Tim Scott as the state's newest U.S. senator.

Colbert-Bush is a Charleston native like her brother and development director at the Clemson University Restoration Institute in nearby North Charleston.

Colbert tweeted Thursday, "Are you in Charleston, SC this Saturday? Me too! Beer, bowling, boiled peanuts! Plus me and my sister Elizabeth."

The tweet included a link to an invitation and an endorsement.

"It is rare for me to take an active role in anyone's political ambitions other than my own. But this is different - beyond a brother's love, I truly believe Lulu is the best candidate to represent my beloved Lowcountry in the United States Congress," said Colbert.

The private event will be held Feb. 23 at The Alley on Columbus Street. There will be a general reception and bowling from 4-6 p.m., as well as a book signing and private reception. Donations to Colbert-Busch's campaign are required for entry.
