COLUMBIA (WACH) - Comedian Stephen Colbert is making a social media push to be selected by Gov. Nikki Haley as U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint's replacement in Senate.
DeMint's departure from Senate means South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will name his successor.
Two tweets appeared on Colbert's Twitter account Thursday night urging his followers to tweet the South Carolina governor:
"Nation! Tell @nikkihaley why I should take over for Jim DeMint! #SenatorColbert Could our Better Tomorrow be... Tomorrow?"
"Tweet @nikkihaley & tell her why I belong in the US Senate. For one, I wouldn't just block legislation, I'd body-check it! #SenatorColbert"
A parody Twitter account, @ColbertforSC, was also created Friday and a website, Colbert for U.S. Senate, was launched. The @ColbertforSC account had nearly 3,000 followers by noon Friday.
The website, which has no affiliation with Stephen Colbert or The Colbert Report, gives supporters a chance to sign a pledge and send a message to Haley through Twitter.
Haley responded to Colbert's push on Facebook and Twitter Friday morning:
"The Colbert Report Stephen, thank you for your interest in South Carolina's U.S. Senate seat and for the thousands of tweets you and your fans sent me.
But you forget one thing, my friend.
You didn't know our state drink. Big, big mistake."
For South Carolinians who are also unsure of the state drink, Haley let Colbert know it is milk when she visited his show in April.
Gov. Nikki Haley released a statement Friday saying she is taking the responsibility of choosing U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint's successor in Sentate with "utmost seriousness."
