Columbia breaks Guiness World Record

COLUMBIA (WACH) - Well Columbia broke a Guiness World Record today!

Close to 1,000 people gathered at the Columbia Metro Center to participate in the "Tie Us Together" event.

The event was an attempt to break the record for the most people simultaneously tying a bow tie.

The previous record was 417 and we shattered it by having over 820 people tying their bow ties at the same time.

And even the Guiness World Record official thought this was a very fitting place to break the existing record.

"Being in South Carolina, being in Columbia, I've seen so many bowties on people already. So this is such a fitting record attempt for the south and for columbia. I'm really excited to be a part of it." says Michael Empric from Guiness World Records.

All the proceeds from the event went directly to the Palmetto Children's Hospital.
