COLUMBIA (WACH) -- There was a packed house during a Columbia City Council meeting Tuesday.
The discussion: the city's homeless.
First, the Homeless Advisory Committee gave a report, followed by the Winter Shelter Report given by Rev. Jimmy Jones from Christ Central Ministries.
Jones told council members that the winter shelter is important because it physically keeps people off the streets. He said the shelter takes in people who are not eligible to go to other places such as Transitions.
"I learned this year about the depth of mental illness on our streets, it was probably the most eye opening thing in the entire process, " said Jones.
Next week, City Council will meet again to hear other reports from Transitions and Path Forward Possibilities.
They will also discuss meal programs and the regulation of meal programs.
