Columbia Fire Department warns community of boot drive scam

This week is the annual Columbia Fire Department boot drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

COLUMBIA (WACH) - This week is the annual Columbia Fire Department boot drive for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. If you drive through Columbia, you will see firefighters standing at different intersections with large boots, taking donations to help people with muscular dystrophy.

But you could also run into folks trying to help themselves to your generosity.

Department spokesman Brick Lewis said fake firefighters use the boot drive to line their own footwear with money intended for muscular dystrophy research.

Lewis said you can tell the good guys from the bad guys by looking for the following things: Columbia firefighters will wear their uniforms, they will also have a marked official fire vehicle nearby.

Lewis also said if you suspect a crook is walking up to you, don't be afraid to keep your money. The Columbia Fire Department would rather you keep your donation than let a criminal gain from your generosity.

If you encounter a suspected crook, dial 911 and report them. The good guys know who they are. A true hero won't push you or pressure you to give.

The boot drive runs from now until March 23.
