      Interim Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins

COLUMBIA (WACH) -- Officials called a press conference Sunday to release the identity of the firefighter who was killed in the line of duty Saturday.

Two firefighters were responding to a brush fire on Interstate 20 at Clemson Road Saturday afternoon when they were hit by a car that entered the median.

Interim Fire Chief Aubrey Jenkins and Richland County Coroner Gary Watts announced that Chance Hyatt Zobel was the Columbia-Richland Firefighter that lost his life.

Chief Jenkins said Zobel was a three year veteran with Engine Company 4 and stationed at Spears Creek Church Road. Zobel started with the Department in October 2007 as a Fire Flow Tech and transferred to Suppression in November of 2009.

The second Firefighter is Larry Kewon Irvin. He was taken to the hospital in critical but stable condition. Irvin has been with the Department for over three years and was hired in January 2007.

Chief Jenkins continued to ask for the community to pray for the families as well as members of the Columbia-Richland Fire Department.
