Columbia voters elect new mayor

Steve Benjamin supporters celebrate his win.

After months of campaigning and a two-way battle to become the Capital City's Chief Executive, the city has a new leader.

Attorney and businessman Steve Benjamin can add another title to his extensive resume, and it's Columbia's Mayor.

On Tuesday, several voters said Benjamin's campaign slogan of "Bold New Leadership," is more than just a motto it's a mission they support.

"A number of people were hoping the city of Columbia could look at being one Columbia, the same thing Benjamin advocated for," said voter Cynthia Hardy.

"This feels like a brand new day for Columbia," said voter Teowonna Clifton. "This for me is just as profound as President Barack Obama being elected."

Steve Benjamin will be sworn in, in June. He succeeds Mayor Bob Coble who did not seek re-election after 20 years in office.
