Cops: Teen loses part of hand during copper theft

Cherokee County sheriff's deputies say an 18-year-old Union man trying to steal copper lost part of his hand after an explosion at a brickyard.

BLACKSBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Cherokee County sheriff's deputies say an 18-year-old Union man trying to steal copper lost part of his hand after an explosion at a brickyard.

Sheriff Steve Mueller told the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg that an officer saw the men climb a chain link fence around 5:30 p.m. Monday and get into a car as smoke billowed from the back of a building at the Borin brickyard.

Authorities say when the officer stopped the car, Jonvan Spears appeared to be suffering severe burns and had lost part of his hand.

Muller says he thinks the men caused an explosion and fire trying to steal copper from the business.

Two men with Spears have been charged with third-degree burglary.

Spears was taken to a burn center in Augusta, Ga. His condition was unavailable.
