COLUMBIA (WACH)â??A man chased by police before killing himself has been identified.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Donald Ross Rikard, 25, of Live Oak St. died after a police chase that ended with Rikard shooting himself. Rikard was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
CPD Spokesman Jennifer Timmons said Sunday night Rikard was accused of armed robbery at an unknown location in Richland County, and a description of the car used was sent to local law enforcement
Timmons said that a car matching the suspect was seen by a CPD officer on Garner's Ferry Road, who attempted to stop it in the area of Pelham Road. The suspect tried to speed off, and hit another car in the process, at which point he fled on foot.
Reports indicate that the officer saw the suspect take a gun with him when he ran from the car, and began to chase him on foot. The officer gave â??repeated verbal commandsâ?? to drop the weapon. Rikard then shot himself in â??the area of the head.â??
Rikard was transported to the hospital, and he was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. Monday .
Timmons said there is no indication that the officer fired his weapon.
As part of standard procedure, the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.
