Coroner says no trauma, foul play in Columbia infant's death

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) - The Richland County Coroner says there were no signs of trauma or foul play in the death of an infant rushed to a Columbia hospital Thursday afternoon.

Coroner Gary Watts says 15-month-old Versha McCants was found unresponsive in a crib Thursday at the Nay's Child Development Center on Monticello Road. The child was taken to Palmetto Health Richland and was later pronounced dead.

While an autopsy performed Friday did not show signs of trauma or foul play, the coroner's office is still waiting on test results before determining a cause of death.

Watts say McCants was one of seven children being cared for at the daycare center on Thursday.

The Richland County Coroners Office and Columbia Police Department continue to investigate the case.
