RICHLAND COUNTY (WACH / AP) - A Corrections Officer at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center is on the other side of the bars after being accused of beating an inmate at the Richland County jail.
Sheriff Leon Lott said Robin Smith, 37, was arrested last Thursday and charged with aggravated assault and battery after the department was notified of an inmate who was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Investigators determined that the assault victim was booked at the Richland County jail on charged of trespassing by the University of South Carolina Police Department on Feb. 11 and was injured when correctional officers entered his cell and he refused to comply with instructions.
Smith is accused of kicking the victim repeatedly in the head and side and put his boot onto the victim's head and neck while pulling the victim's arm the opposite direction, according to Lott.
Smith had worked at the jail two years. County spokeswoman Stephany Snowden says he was fired Monday.
Lott says the Alvin S. Glenn Detention staff is cooperating with investigators.
Hospital officials tell the department the victim is in critical but stable condition.
Department officials say the investigation is ongoing.
