Debris crewman killed by SUV while trying to avoid a falling tree
COLUMBIA (WACH) - Authorities say a worker helping to clear trees and other winter storm debris along I-26 has been killed

Around 11:45 Sunday morning at mile marker 187 in Ridgeville, a road crew member hired by South Carolina to remove trees and other debris left from February's winter storm had cut into a tree. It began to fall toward his co-worker, 34 year old Heath Sutherland, who ran into the eastbound lane to avoid the tree but was instead struck buy an SUV. The driver and a passenger in the SUV were not hurt. Traffic was at a standstill for the early afternoon as rescue crews did what they could during the ordeal.
