Richland Co. (WACH)--The Richland County Sheriff's Department along with other organizations did what they can to keep children safe inside vehicles.
The department, along with the Irmo Fire Department and Department of Health and Environmental Control teamed up with the Buckle Buddies organization to hold a free car seat safety inspection on Saturday at Capital Chevrolet.
Nationally certified child passenger safety technicians installed seats the correct way and answered questions from parents. According to DHEC, motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of injury and death among children over the age of one.
Emily Marr, with Buckle Buddies, said she hopes that number will decrease.
"A properly installed car seat can reduce that chance of injury or death by 71%," Marr said. "95% of all car seats in South Carolina are not used properly. The proper installation can greatly increase the chance the child will survive."
RCSD and the Irmo Fire Department both now have certified technicians thanks to the training provided.
